An Online Rent Agreement, also commonly known as a Lease Agreement, is a legal document that grants permission from the property owner to the tenant for the temporary occupation of the property, be it for commercial or residential purposes. This agreement, defined and governed by Sections 52 to 64 of the Easements Act, 1882, establishes an easement right. Mandatory registration of the Rent Agreement is outlined in Section 55 of the Rent Control Act and Section 17 of the Registration Act, and it can be executed for a period of up to 60 months. It's important to distinguish this agreement from a lease, as it confers no rights to the tenant beyond the specified terms and conditions.

Traditionally, parties and witnesses had to visit the registration office, leading to prolonged processes. However, in 2015, the Department of Registration and Stamp of Maharashtra pioneered E-Registration of Rent Agreements, allowing clients to register properties from any part of the world.

The E-Registration of the rent agreement involves a seamless online process, ensuring convenience and efficiency for both landlords and tenants. Various Authorized Service Providers, such as, appointed by the Department of Registration and Stamps, offer E-Registration facilities to citizens, regardless of their location.
